India braces for court verdict in 60-year-old case of mosque-temple dispute

AYODHYA, India (AP) — From a distance — and few are allowed to get close — the simple white tent housing the modest idol appears no more threatening than any of the thousands of other Hindu shrines in a town renowned for its temples. But that makeshift temple, and the ruins of the demolished mosque it sits upon, stand at the center of a religious dispute that has shaken the core of modern India and led to repeated outbreaks of Hindu-Muslim violence. On Friday, an Indian court will finally issue its ruling in the 60-year-old case and decide whether the site should be given to the Hindu community to build a gigantic temple to the god Rama or should be returned to the Muslim community so it can rebuild the 16th-century Babri Mosque. Though there are no signs of a repeat of the communal violence that killed 2,000 people in nationwide rioting in 1992 and nearly 1,000 more in the state of Gujarat in 2002, India is worried. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told journalists earlier this month that the judgment was one of his top concerns, and, in an extraordinary move, his Cabinet bought half-page newspaper advertisements appealing for calm.

New India security chief may herald China outreach

NEW DELHI, Jan 22 (Reuters) - India has appointed a former top diplomat as National Security Adviser in a move that may see efforts to improve ties with rival Pakistan and push for better relations with China. Shiv Shankar Menon, 60, takes over from M.K. Narayanan, a former intelligence chief seen as having a more hawkish approach to regional security, and who critics said lacked a wider geopolitical understanding. Menon, who retired last year as head of India's foreign service, played a crucial role in cementing ties with the United States through a civilian nuclear technology deal and seeking to normalise relations with Pakistan after the 2008 Mumbai attack. The NSA coordinates both internal and external security in India, as well as playing a role in setting India's diplomatic agenda. Narayanan was a key negotiator in the U.S. civilian nuclear deal in 2008. More information on reuters.com

Clinton urges Myanmar to begin planning 2010 vote

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday urged Myanmar to begin planning for its 2010 elections and said Southeast Asian nations could play an important role in ensuring the vote is "free, fair and credible." Clinton, speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of the APEC meetings in Singapore, said Washington would like to see the reclusive military-led government of the former Burma begin internal consultations soon about the country's political future. "We're seeking ... a process inside Burma that would inspire a dialogue among all of the stakeholders so that there could be a growing consensus within Burma itself about the way forward," she said.

Political parties

India has a multi-party system with a predominance of small regional parties. National parties are those that are recognized in four or more states. They are accorded this status by the Election Commission of India, which periodically reviews the election results in various states. This recognition helps the political parties to claim unique ownership of certain identities, such as the party symbol, until the next review of their status. Below are national parties as per October 2004.

Politics

Politics of India take place in a framework of a federal parliamentary multi-party representative democratic republic modeled after the British Westminster System. The Prime Minister of India is the head of government, while the President of India is the formal head of state and holds substantial reserve powers, placing him or her in approximately the same position as the British monarch. Executive power is exercised by the government. Federal legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of the Parliament of India. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. According to its constitution, India is a "sovereign socialist secular democratic republic." India is the largest state by population with a democratically-elected government. Like the United States, India has a federal form of government, however, the central government in India has greater power in relation to its states, and its central government is patterned after the British parliamentary system.
